Uma Thurman a cougar? Actress stays in character at post-premiere party

Uma Thurmanseems ambivalent about being called a cougar— even in the context of a movie role. At Tuesday night'sPeggy Siegal Companyscreening of"Ceremony,"at the Angelika, Thurman walked away from us when we asked what it was like to play an older woman pursued by a younger former flame, and used the c-word to describe the part. But before leaving us in the dust, the icy blond beauty looked over her shoulder and replied,"Better than being a letch."

We'll take that to mean Thurman, 40, isultimately cougar-proud — especially since a source at the post-premiere party atDon Hill's tells us the actress seemed to still be in character when she cuddled up to the film's 27-year-old director,Max Winkler, in a dark corner around midnight. Winkler is the son of veteran comic actor Henry (Da Fonz) Winkler, who was also on hand.

Handy man

Russell Brandis a hands-on kind of guy. At the N.Y. premiere of"Arthur"at theZiegfeld Theater, the cheeky comic treated our female reporter to one of the oddest interviews of her career. He considerately brushed her hair away from her eyes— and then shook her by the shoulders as he said that getting punched in the face by his co-starHelen Mirren"is like fellatio from another woman."Fortunately, both our reporter and her recorder were shockproof.

Miles apart

Amar'e StoudemireandChris Boshare longtime rivals who have the same taste in restaurants. A source tells us the N.Y. Knick andMiami Heatstars both caught the Butler vs.University of Connecticutchampionship game on Monday at the Ainsworth on W. 26th St., and due to their well-known confrontations, employees of the upscale sports pub kept them far apart. A"blinged out"Stoudemire and his entourage of eight were seated near the front. Bosh sat in back with two pals.

Tropical bash in Union Square

Barbara Corcoranknows that subtle's no way to celebrate. The real estate mogul, who sold theCorcoran Co.in 2001 for about $70 million, now appears onABC's"Shark Tank,"and she threw a tropical-themed Tuesday night bash in honor of her book"Shark Tales: How I Turned $1,000 Into a Billion Dollar Business."Glittery shirtless dudes distributed mai tais at theUnion Squarespace while Barbara sat in a throne  beneath a tree of billion-dollar bills bearing her likeness. Co-author Bruce Littlefield wore a costume that made it look like he was being eaten by a shark. And"Today's"Al Rokerwas just being his bad self.

Time for a piece of cake

TheAtkinswidow's low-carb dollars are safe— for now, at least. In February, we reported on the tawdry accusations thatIldiko Vargahad made against Veronica Atkins and her husband,Alexis Mersentes: Varga claimed in a lawsuit that her one-time lover Mersentes had disseminated racy pictures of her without her consent, and called him"a world-class gigolo"preying on wealthy widows. Varga's camp was even moving to add Atkins as a defendant in the suit, but Varga's lawyerGreg Morsetells us both parties agreed to call off the hearing— although it could be rescheduled."For now,"he said, Atkins is not a party to the suit. Maybe she can celebrate with a muffin?

Gwyneth Paltrow-Matthew Morrison romance? No chance says those close to actress

Pay no attention to reports of a romance between"Glee"starMatthew Morrisonand recurring guest starGwyneth Paltrow. A source close to the actress notes that Paltrow, 38, thinks of Morrison, 32, as her"little brother"and would have a very difficult time envisioning him in a romantic light. Sorry, Gleeks, but that's exactly what we were thinking.

Hard times of Keanu

We bet Keanu ReeveslikesMichael Jackson's"Billie Jean."At theCinema Societyscreening of"Henry's Crime,"about an ex-con released from prison for a crime he didn't commit, we asked Reeves, who stars in the film, if he'd even been wrongly accused."I have had a couple of paternity suits,"said the actor."It was horrible."Reeves' co-starJames Caanwas more cryptic about the cast on his foot. At the post-screening party at the Trilby in theCooper Square Hotel, he told a fellow guest that he broke his foot during"non-Jewish activities."Huh?

Fan-tastic experience

'SellingNew York' fans, brush up on your multitasking. Thursday night, beginning at 9, cast membersDeborah LupardandKaren GastiaburoofWarburg Realty Partnershipwill host a"virtual viewing party"during the season-three premiere of theHGTVreality series. Fans who log on to Warburg'sFacebookfan page can ask them questions in real (estate) time.

To her advantage

Katie Lee may be the unlikely winner in the aftermath ofBilly Joel's decision to pull the plug on his $3 million memoir,"The Book of Joel."On June 21,Simon and Schuster's Gallery imprint will publish the 29-year-old Lee's first novel,"Groundswell."That work, say music industry sources, sounds like a thinly veiled romanà clef inspired by her brief marriage to Joel, who was her elder by more than 30 years. (The couple married in 2004 and separated in 2009.)

We kind of see what they mean after reading a synopsis of"Groundswell"on the websiteChicklitClub.com, which describes the novel as one woman's"journey of self-discovery after the breakup of her marriage to an older movie star."

Perhaps readers will be able to glean the kind of juicy details from"Groundswell"that, we hear, Joel was loathe to include in his book."The Book of Joel"was supposed to hit stores on June 14, just a week before Lee. But now it looks like his ex has the field all to herself.

Wanna get away?

Jay-Zand Beyonce have 99 problems, but relaxing isn't one. The hip-hop mogul and his diva-licious wife celebrated their third anniversary on the Abaco Islands in theCaribbeanover the weekend. We hear the pair stayed at Baker's Bay, a swank new development on Great Guana Cay.

Despite their luxurious living arrangements, our insider tells us Jayoncé — and their security — spent Sunday at Nipper's, a laid-back bar"famous"for its neon color scheme and pig roasts. The destination is also known for the tunes of the Barefoot Man, a Caribbean musician, and as a place where locals and tourists alike spend all day"getting‘nipped'"— in other words, intoxicated.  We don't know if the couple partook of the custom, but our source did say that Beyoncé, clad in a white coverup, bikini and floppy straw hat, was quite affectionate with her hubby.

Different perspective

Why is this performance of"Lombardi"different from all others?

If you're talking about next Tuesday, it's because after the play at Broadway'sCircle in the Square Theater, formerNFLoffensive linemanAlan Veingradwill share his story of being the only Jewish player on theSuper Bowl XXVIIchampionDallas Cowboys. Veingrad will relate the discipline of being a professional athlete to the process of becoming an observant Jew.

Reese Witherspoon in Elle UK: I'learnt a lot'from failed marriage to Ryan Phillippe

They might have been Hollywood's hottest young couple, butReese Witherspoonsaid she was"ridiculously young"when she marriedRyan Phillippein 1999.

The recently re-married Witherspoon told UKElle magazinethat she learned a lot from the marriage to her"Cruel Intentions"co-star, whom she met at her 21st birthday party in 1997.

The pair have two children, Ava and Deacon, both of whom were there when Witherspoon tied the knot withJim Tothlast weekend.

"I was so, so young,"she said."I learnt a lot though. It was an excellent opportunity for me to really find out what it means to be a partner and to be in a marriage and it's not anything that I thought it was."

The two split in October of 2007, but Witherspoon said she realized a valuable lesson for her second marriage.

"You can't say, 'I don't want to talk about that,'"she said."You just can't. You've got to talk about it all."

PHOTOS: STARS WHO FALL IN LOVE ON SET

Despite a two-year relationship withJake Gyllenhaalthat ended in 2009, theOscar winnersounded relieved to have finally found the one… again.

"I think dating is inherently complicated, anyways; what I do for a living makes it even more complicated,"she told the magazine."Let's just say I'm happy to not be dating. I met a wonderful man. I feel really really lucky."

With a great man at her side, that's one less thing that the actress has to worry about– which is important for someone who said her worst trait is a worrier – no matter how successful of an actress she is.

"I'm in my head a lot and I… worry,"she said."I know it's bad for me and I know I shouldn't do it, but I do."

After all, being an actress in Tinseltown means that judgment never ends, she said.

"It doesn't ever stop,"she told the magazine."Judging. Rejecting. They can really kick ya, you know? You're constantly criticized. It's really hard to pick yourself up everyday."

"While waiting for their drinks, Pete had his arm around Ashlee and they definitely looked like a couple again,"a source toldPeople.com.
