Henry Cavill engaged:'Man of Steel'star pops the question to British athlete Ellen Whitaker

Henry Cavill may be the Man of Steel on-screen, but he's about to be a married man in real life.

The British actor, who is set to play Superman in the"Man of Steel"film due out in 2012, is engaged to athlete Ellen Whitaker, theBelfast Telegraphreported.

The actor, who turns 28 on Thursday, reportedly popped the question to Whitaker, an athlete who is currently training in hopes of making the British showjumping team in the 2012 Olympics, while they were on a trip to Hollywood.

"I couldn't believe it when he asked me to marry him,"she told the newspaper."I thought we were there to celebrate his birthday. It was such a surprise and I am so happy."

Before asking for Whitaker's hand in marriage, Cavill reportedly asked her father, Stephen, for permission before he got down on bended knee.

Before he becomes best known for playing Clark Kent's superhero alter ego on-screen, Cavill is most remembered for his first starring role in Showtime's"The Tudors."
