John Stamosstunned a stunning brunette during brunch at Lavo on Saturday. A source tells us the actor was exiting the men's room with bodyguard in tow when a lovely lady in her 20s stopped him in his tracks. The"Glee"guest star told the hottie,"You're so pretty,"then leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. Before the woman could regain her composure, Stamos strutted back into the main room to rejoin the carnivallike weekly party there.
Sumpter always gives friends a lil sum'thing sum'thing
Tika Sumpterdidn't let her friend go home empty-handed fromRebecca Taylor'sMeatpacking Districtstore-opening Wednesday night. After the"Gossip Girl"actress' gal pal tried on a scalloped, strapless dress from Taylor's spring collection, she decided against buying it and left it in the dressing room. WhenSumter, 27, found out, one source tells us, she marched back to the cubicle, which was occupied by another partygoer, retrieved the frock and bought it for her pal along with a bowling bag-style purse for herself.
The Queen is tired
Aretha Franklinbailed on birthday plans to see"Driving Miss Daisy"on Friday night, disappointing the theatergoers and paparazzi who waited in front of the Golden Theatre hoping to catch a glimpse of the 69-year-old singer. After taking in aKnicksgame Wednesday and dinner withClive DavisThursday, a source tells us Aretha was just too tired for a play. So while she rested up for her birthday bash later that night,Al Rokerand his wifeDeborah Robertstook her seats. Alas, Franklin's not always quite so generous. Guests at her Park Lane party got one drink coupon apiece, then had to pay at a cash bar. But hey, she's the Queen of Soul, not the Queen of Comps!
Shandling has plenty of fans
Garry Shandlingknows where to get some reaffirmation when he needs it. At the after-party at Monkey Bar forComedy Central's Comedy Awards,"The Larry Sanders Show"star held court with what appeared to be a Greek chorus of male comedy hopefuls in slim-fitting suits and skinny ties. Shandling had been one of the evening’' presenters, and his unfocused spiel had been the subject of a joke byDavid Lettermanlater that night. At the bar, Shandling— noting that Dave"took a shot"at him— asked the worshipful men,"Did I embarrass myself?""No!"the Rat-Pack repros replied almost in union."You were fantastic!"
Kaplan says he's no bigot
Earlier this month, we reported that makeup artistJasen Kaplanaccused Avenue doormanWass Stevensof using a homophobic slur when he barred the stylist from the club during a party forAubrey O'Day. Stevens initially declined to comment, but he's since come forward to insist that Kaplan's"reported statements are inaccurate and a complete fabrication."He added, I've never used an offensive slur of this nature against him or anyone else,"and"I've never been accused of this kind of bigotry."
Stevens' account of what happened that night is substantially different from Kaplan's. The doorman claims the makeup artist became"aggressive and belligerent"when his name was not on the guest list, and Kaplan was asked to call one of the party's organizers to come down and vouch for him.
In Kaplan's version, the person who came down was a woman. In Stevens' account, it was a man, who, he says,"apologized to me"after witnessing part of Kaplan's"tirade."As a result of Kaplan's alleged aggressiveness, Stevens said he decided not to let the makeup artist into the club because"he was a potential safety risk."The differences don't end there, but since Kaplan stands by his account and says the club's surveillance tapes would bear him out— and since we have additional sources backing up each side in this contretemps — we believe the best route is to let each party have his say.
